MUSKOGEE, Okla. – A grand slam in the ninth inning was the key blow as Texas Wesleyan defeated the Bacone Lady Warriors 9-5 in nine innings on Friday, Mar. 30.
Bacone got off to a strong start in the first inning when Ashley Covington blasted a two-run homerun with two outs; the Lady Rams did answer with a score on a wild pitch and a RBI groundout to tie it at 2-2.
In the third inning Karina Watson scored from the third when pinch runner Ashton Scott tried to steal second; the 3-2 lead didn’t last very long when Texas Wesleyan’s Christian Kelley hit a two-run homer to put the Lady Rams in front 4-3. After reaching base on walk, Watson would again score this time a double to deep right by Covington.
Tied 4-4 both squads scored in dramatic fashion in the eighth inning; the first was another home run by the Lady Rams to lead 5-4 but the Lady Warrior’s Keri Schmidt answered with a homer herself, tying the game at 5-5.
The Lady Warriors proceeded to load the bases with no outs, needing just one score to take the victory; a groundout, pop out and strikeout in order by Bacone halted that threat.
In the top of the ninth the Lady Rams managed to load the bases and set the stage for Lindsay Cline’s grand slam and second homerun of the afternoon which put Texas Wesleyan in control at 9-5; the Lady Warriors went down in order in the bottom of the ninth, sealing the defeat.
Covington led the Lady Warriors at the plate, going two for two with a homer and three RBIs; Taylor Paulson was charged for the loss, allowing nine runs in the complete game.
Bacone (13-17, 8-5) is back at home for a doubleheader against Texas Wesleyan on Saturday, Mar. 31 at noon.
