TYLER, Texas – The newly ranked No. 25 Bacone Warriors lived up to their billing on Saturday, Oct. 26 with a 49-13 thrashing of Central States football league foe Texas College.
Texas College jumped to an early lead when Erick Trigueros knocked in a 26-yard field goal to give the Steers the 3-0 advantage.
The Warriors responded when Kyle Kuban hit Jamaal Surrell for a 13-yard touchdown; the score capped a 5-play, 66-yard drive.
Surrell answered the call again on Bacone’s next drive when he hauled in a 10-yard touchdown toss from Karl Birkenfield to give Bacone the 14-3 lead with six minutes remaining.
The Steers answered with a 61-yard touchdown run by quarterback Curtez Griffin to cut the deficit to 14-10; the Warriors responded in kind with a two-yard run by Birkenfield to put Bacone in front 21-10.
Texas College collected the final score when a 10-play, 33-yard drive ended with a 48-yard field goal by Trigueros as Bacone led 21-13 at halftime.
After intermission it was complete domination by the Warriors.
Kuban led Bacone on a 12-play, 67-yard drive which ended with him tossing an eight-yard strike to David Chapman.
Jamarkus Thomas then rumbled his way for a 25-yard touchdown to add to Bacone’s advantage at 35-13 with 7:37 remaining in the third quarter.
The final two scores for Bacone came on the defensive when Keshauna Malone intercepted Texas College quarterback Curtez Griffin and raced 47-yards to pay dirt; Montoya Waiters matched Malone with a 34-yard interception return for a touchdown as well in the 49-13 victory.
Kuban finished 13-for-22 for 133 yards and two scores; Jamarkus Thomas led the ground game with 68 yards on five carries.
Renaldo Reyes led all receivers with seven catches for 77 yards.
Deantre Harlan anchored the Warriors defense with six tackles including 3.5 sacks.
Bacone (6-2, 2-0) hosts Oklahoma Baptist next Saturday, Nov. 2 at 2 p.m.
