Warriors Unable to Get Out of Arlington

January 13, 2013

ARLINGTON, Texas – The No. 20th ranked Bacone Warriors returned to the wrestling mats for the first time in 2013 on Saturday, Jan. 12 at the Lone Star Duals; the squad faced the University of Texas-Arlington, Cumberland University, and Wayland Baptist.

The Warriors opened up against NWCA club team Texas Arlington where they easily dominated Arlington 54-0 in the first dual.

In the following dual, Bacone fell to No.15 Cumberland University (Tenn.) in the second dual, 25-9.

"This was the dual we were looking forward to," stated head coach Brett Oleson. “I felt both teams are very similar and thought it was a very competitive dual.  The difference in us winning was as a team we did not finish matches and couldn't get out from bottom. Tyler Klinkhammer gave up a last second takedown against a ranked opponent to send his match to overtime where we lost; Chico Berry lost a close match, and heavy weight Cesar Ponce got caught in the first.  Those were three winnable matches that would have changed the outcome of the dual.”

In the final dual of the day the Warriors lost to Wayland Baptist 31-11; Bacone was only able to win three out of the ten matches against the Pioneers.

“This was just an ugly dual.” said Oleson. “We easily beat them in December and just got our butt kicked plain and simple.  I don’t know if we were overconfident, not ready to compete, or a combination of both. Postseason is a month away so we have to get back to quality wrestling."

Senior Arnol Arroliga from Miami, Fla. at 157 pounds and junior Chase Martinez from Oklahoma City, Okla. at 133 pounds were the only Warriors to go undefeated at the duals.

Bacone is back in action on Saturday, Jan. 19 at the Missouri Valley Invite.
