FT. WORTH, TX – A full game and two overtime periods was not enough to decide the first round Red River Athletic Conference Women’s Soccer tournament matchup between Bacone and Texas Wesleyan on Nov. 5.
Deadlocked at 1-1 the game was decided on penalty kicks, which ended with the #6 seed Lady Warriors outshooting the #3 seed Texas Wesleyan 4-2 to advance to the second round of the conference playoffs.
Brittany Woodward and Jessica Harper scored on their penalty kicks but Texas Wesleyan’s first two penalty tries missed putting the Lady Warriors up 2-0.
Shelby Zielke missed for Bacone while Texas Wesleyan added a score to put it at 2-1. Beulah Oney added to that margin as she scored on her penalty kick but the Lady Rams’ Brianna Wilson also scored to make it 3-2 in favor of the Lady Warriors.
In the first half Bacone led 1-0 when Jessica Flores scored off an assist from Harper but the Lady Rams scored at the 43rd minute to tie at 1-1.
Goalie Veronica Helguera collected 11 saves.
The deciding penalty kick came from Jennifer Contreras which pushes Bacone into the second round of the conference playoffs with a matchup against #1 seed UT-Brownsville on Friday, Nov. 11 at 5:30 p.m. in Fort Worth, TX.
The win marks the first time Bacone (7-8-2) advances past the first round under head coach Ana Costa.
